Niki and I went to a Harry Potter release party at Book People tonight. Notice I say "went to" and not "attended". We got there, we (eventually) found parking, we wandered in, we waited in line for her to pick up her voucher, we saw the mob, the line for when the book would be released (in about two and a half hours from the time we arrived), how far away the magic show was and how hard it would be to see or hear it, and the line for the ice cream, and then we bailed. It just wasn't organized well at all. The line was all roped off with something very much like crime scene tape, and since most people present were in some line or other, there wasn't a lot in the way of mingling or interaction, and there was very poor lighting, so there went the people watching, and it was outdoors, so very humid and yucky, and the entertainment wasn't very. There were a lot of kids in costume, which was cute, and would have been much cuter in air conditioning and better lighting.

So instead we went to Trudy's, for which I conceived a sudden hankering earlier this week, and then we went to Amy's, and then we came home, and it was fun, even if we are still both without new Harry Potter books. (I ordered mine from Amazon, but apparently not soon enough for it to get here quickly. Still, I saved a bunch of money on it; thirty bucks for a book is a bit silly.)

Her boyfriend doesn't like Harry Potter. He tried reading the first book and only got about halfway through it. And, ok, whatever. But the funny part is that he conceived these ideas about it based only on what he read, so he thought that Draco was the main villain and was going on about how everyone had said there was this creepy evil bad guy, and what was so menacing about some snotty 11-year-old kid, and on like that. I mean, come on, it's not like it's a long book or a hard read, it would take what, an extra hour or two to read the rest of the book? And then you wouldn't sound like a complete prat when you complained about it. So now I must mock him the next time I see him (or maybe the time after that, since the next time I see him he'll likely be helping me with my calculus homework).
